How do you start going to the gym when youre too embaressed?

At my university we have access to a really nice gym where the membership is built into our student fees (so I’m paying for it regardless). I used to be pretty good about going, always tagging along with a friend and doing some abs in the stretch room, but due to conflicting schedules and the annoyance of having to wait for someone, id really like to be able to go alone. Heres the thing though, my school has a really bad rep for “judging at the gym” (our school news paper did an article about it). By that I mean people give you the “up-down” and just make you feel kinda shitty about yourself. I really want to workout but I’m just so self conscious and I genuinely don’t know where to even start (what plan to follow, how to use machines, what is proper gym etiquette, etc).
